How to identify a Lesbian

Throughout my life I've been told that it is a lot
harder to spot a lesbian than a gay man, that women
find it easier to hide their sexual orientation, or even
that lesbians don't exist (don't try that last one, kids.)
Because you may need to know if someone is a
lesbian, or you would like to strike up the
conversation to see if they are, I thought it would be
handy to make a checklist for you to know if perhaps
your friend or someone you want to date... is lesbian.

Some of what is in this article can match up with
straight females, and many of what is here applies to
bisexuality as well, but more so we're focusing on
what appears more straight and what appears more
lesbian.

First, let's take a look at fashion trends.

Lesbians tend to wear their hair in a different manner
than straight females. That isn't to say that some
lesbians like to be a femme as possible.
But there are some dead giveaway lesbian hair styles.

First, unless you are a princess with a pixie hair cut,
short hair can definitely be suspicious. I can't think of
a single straight female who wears hair gel seriously.

A lot of straight women want their hair to be soft and
for men to like to run their fingers through it, which
having lots of hair product in your hair would make
this difficult. Straight women may apply more to their
hair for curly hair, this does not have the same effect
as having short hair with hair gel.

Straight women generally do not wear fohawks, have
Justin Bieber like hair, etc. Exceptions to this rule are
if the lady is fairly artistic or have Emma Watson or
Jennifer Lawrence type qualities. High cheek bones
help if you want a pixie cut and you are a straight
female.

2. Lesbian clothing is somewhat similar to men
clothing. They like to pop collars, wear clunky doc
martin or less colorful of shoes. Skinny jeans are a
norm... but skinny jeans are great for a lot of women.
Flannel is a clue, but how often do they wear flannel?

Midwesterners love flannel. A bandana does lean
more toward lesbian than straight. Some lesbians do
not like or feel comfortable in dresses, skirts, heels,
and leggings. They may abandon ship when it comes
to make-up, unless they are good at rocking a natural
look.

3. Lesbians like to keep their fingernails super short,
partly to be cute but also this fits with lesbian sex.

4. Giant glasses frames. If she is wearing short hair
with gel and glasses with huge frames... it speaks to
all kinds of lesbianisms. Straight girls wear fun
glasses to, but the combination with short hair tends
to set off a lesbian vibe.

5. Wife beaters. If she is walking around in track suits
and wife beaters at a young age, she might be trying
to project a more masculine persona.
6. Absence of ever carrying a purse but always a
wallet.

7. Avoidance of shirts that over flatter the chest area.

A lot of lesbians don't like that they have breasts.
Some don't care, but many of them wish more so in a
peculiar way up into an older age (because young
girls who just get them from puberty are weirder out
by their body) that they don't want that being a
prominent feature. The breast area is obviously
flattering to flirting with men, and though women
may like the breasts on another women, they may
not want to showcase theirs for men to ogle.

8. Short hair and a backwards ball cap or sideways
ball cap.

9. Women who experiment a lot with the color of
their hair, may be more sexually promiscuous. If
they're going from green, to blue, to pink, to purple --
this could be an indication of being artsy, but I've
seen many bi-sexual women do this.

10. Not shaving legs ever. Granted, a lot of women
could care less about shaving their legs. Straight
women are at least going to have thoughts about leg
hair -- some macho lesbians have never quite
realized that they even could shave it.
11. Cologne instead of perfume.

Next, let's consider how she is socially.

1. Lesbians more than likely are going to find
friendships with other lesbians, gays, and bisexual
friends. They have things in common. That isn't to say
that straight females are not allies to lesbians, but
more than likely a straight female will have a solid
group or two, or seven, of straight females. A lesbian
will have a large pool of gay friends.

2. A lesbian is more than likely going to join a group
in college or high school in support of gay
awareness. If you do a little bit of Facebook stalking
you can check her groups to see if she has joined
something like this, or has photographs that point
toward this.

3. She may not know logically if she is lesbian so she
may want to feel her truth, i.e., explore with other
women. You may find that she has pictures playfully
kissing another female. Or she may suddenly become
touchy toward women and have slight sexual
overtones to change the mood. She may not be
straight up lesbian, but she is flirting with the idea.

4. What are her music tastes? Does she like watching
shows on Bravo? Does she love, love, love Tegan and
Sarah? Does she watch Glee and comment more on
the women than the men?

5. Lesbians probably don't want to position
themselves around single straight men, unless they
want to explore with men first to see how it goes.

They would probably enjoy beer, knives, fixing cars,
surviving in the woods, playing football and other
rough sports, binge eating, and cars (especially
trucks) more so than the straight woman. Sure,
straight women like some of these things, but if on a
man night she doesn't have some flare to her
femininity and is playing more of a one-of-the-guys
card -- that is suspicious.

6. If she is a singer in a choir -- does she have an
absurd fear of becoming a soprano? A lot of lesbians
would prefer to be altos as it is closer to a masculine
voice. Straight women are not going to care.

7. What kind of books and magazines does she have?
What is the central topic of these magazines and
books?

8. If she has had a past relationship or two with
women, though she may be with a man now, she
probably likes women still.

9. If she frequents a gay bar or other hot spot gay
venue, it might not be because she finds drag queens
amusing, she may be trying to find others she can
connect with.

10. Does she talk about moving to San Francisco or
other more open to different forms of sexuality
cities?

How does she socialize with men?
Some women can hide that they're not interested in
men and will go along with it. But does she never
seem to care if any men are around?

Does the idea of
being married to a man sound repulsive?

Some
women have concerns before having sex along with
other legitimate fears. Granted, there should be
some flirting seen when addressing men. She should
more than likely have a few favorite male singers,
actors, authors, etc., if she likes men. More than
likely she will dress to impress them whether
consciously or subconsciously. She might not rub up
against him and try to get in his pants, but she may
be focused on trying to communicate with the men,
make them laugh, smiling, etc.

Lesbians are going to be more concerned about the
women in this department. They want to be the
shoulder that a girl will cry on. Straight women are
going to have different boundaries. They probably
don't care to touch you in certain areas like your
belly, right below, and your thighs. Some women find
breasts hilarious, but this shouldn't be a consistent
wanting to touch and look at your boobs. Lesbians
won't like your boyfriends if they have a crush on
you; in a sense, they want to be your boyfriend so
they'll be tired of you dating boys.

As for health:

1. Lesbians are more likely to smoke than
heterosexual women. Bisexual women are known for
smoking the most.

2.
According to Women's Health
"Heavy drinking and drug abuse appear to be more
common among lesbians (especially young women)
than heterosexual women. Lesbian and bisexual
women are also more likely to drink alcohol and
smoke marijuana in moderation than other women
are. Bisexual women are the most likely to have
injected drugs, putting them at a higher risk for
sexually transmitted infections (STIs)."

3. Some studies suggest that lesbians think less about
weight issues than heterosexual women do.
